Outstanding Hill Smith Stakes win for Beluga Blue

Oct 10, 2015

Exciting galloper Beluga Blue notched her first stakes win with a determined effort in the Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1800m) at Morphettville.

Beluga Blue had won one of her previous six starts but had displayed enormous potential with her efforts leading up to the Hill Smith Stakes success, which included a strong effort in the Listed Morphettville Guineas two starts prior.

Clare Lindop took over from Todd Pannell aboard Beluga Blue in the $100,000 event after riding the filly back in August and the champion jockey took the chance to let her settle towards the back of the field early.

Beluga Blue was three-wide with cover midrace before Lindop let her improve from the 800m, sending her forward four and five wide to be in touch with the leaders on the home turn.

The runner-up Colonel Custer skipped away halfway down the straight but Beluga Blue lifted to overhaul him late to complete a gritty win.

Beluga Blue made her own little slice of history when she became the first Australian stakes winner for young US stallion Lookin At Lucky, vindicating her connections’ decision to take a punt on the sire’s progeny.

Leon Macdonald Racing paid $100,000 for Beluga Blue at the 2014 Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale but the filly has almost recouped that amount after earning $67,300 for her maiden stakes win.

Congratulations to Beluga Blue’s owners and all involved with the promising filly’s terrific Hill Smith Stakes win.
