Melbourne Cup day treble at Morphettville

The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas team dominated the Melbourne Cup day meeting at Morphettville after notching a winning treble.

Macdonald and Gluyas needed just five runners to achieve its Morphettville trio of wins, which began when smart three-year-old Surprise Us comfortably won the Port Adelaide FC Maiden Plate (1600m).

Surprise Us showed his enjoyment of racing over 1600 metres with his last-start third before his strong Morphettville victory. Surprise Us settled behind the leaders before the son of promising Swettenham Stud stallion Host drew away to score by three lengths.

"I watched the win on Sky Channel at Flemington and couldn't believe it was the same horse," Macdonald said. "He was green and a bit ordinary during his first campaign earlier this year.

"But he's really starting to mature now and looked nice and balanced on Tuesday. I know some of the other trainers reckon the Hosts will keep improving as autumn three year-olds and I agree with them.

"We will probably give Surprise Us another run and then turn him out for a spell. His dam is a Zabeel mare so he should get over more ground next time in."

Tsarina Wonder scored an equally impressive victory in the Georgiou Financial Services Rating 75 Handicap (2500m), also with Lindop aboard.

Lindop rated the mare perfectly in front, enabling the daughter of Churchill Downs to hold off her opposition to score a comfortable 1-3/4-length victory.

US-bred mare Juliet’s Princess rounded out the stable treble with her strong win in the Gaucho’s Restaurant Rating 81 Handicap (1200m).

The triple success kept Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas at the top of the Adelaide trainers’ premiership with 14 metropolitan wins in South Australia.
