Viking Star begins treble for dam with latest win

Oct 06, 2012

Viking Star began a remarkable treble for his dam when the three-year-old completed his second successive victory in the Centrebet 3YO Handicap (1300m) at Morphettville Parks.

The son of the former Leon Macdonald-trained Group 3 winner Dane Belltar was the first of three winners foaled in one day by the broodmare with his half-brothers Tanby and Fawkner also winning at Flemington.

Viking Star showed his talent with a two-length win at his last outing at Morphettville on September 22 before stepping to 1300 metres with 59kg for his latest assignment.

Clare Lindop remained aboard Viking Star in the $40,000 race but an ordinary start left the pair second last in the early stages but the son of Red Ransom travelled comfortably for the top jockey.

Lindop eased Viking Star three-wide to make ground from the 600 metres.

The gelding got through his gears well to have the leader in his sights at the 200 metres.

Viking Star hit the front with 100 metres to run but then had to fight hard to stave off the challenge of the backmarker Pharomac to win by a half-head.

The grey’s latest success was his third from five starts but the promising prospect has the scope to record further wins as he rises in distance during the rest of his preparation.

Viking Star has now won more than $73,000 in stakes for his owners - P Chungsuwathananon, R Holton, D Bingley, Mrs C Brooks, P Lamming, Dr P Goel, S Raleigh, Mrs A Marshall & Mrs G Naffine.
