Brilliant debut for Essay Raider
Sep 29, 2012
Smart three-year-old Essay Raider lived up to an impressive trial eight months earlier with a brilliant debut win in the Sloan’s Sands Handicap (1000m) on the Morphettville Parks track.
Essay Raider won his trial at the venue on January 9 this year before co-trained Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas gave the son of Bernardini further time to develop during the winter months.
The gelding went into his debut run without an official barrier trial but he had little trouble handling his four rivals in the $34,000 race.
Essay Raider jumped smartly for stable jockey Clare Lindop before mustering terrific natural pace to sit on the speed for the first 800 metres of the event.
Lindop gave Essay Raider more rein when he entered the straight before the outstanding prospect ambled away from his opposition to stamp himself as a horse with a terrific future.
Essay Raider had 5-1/2 lengths to spare on the line but the margin could have been greater had Lindop not been kind to him over the concluding stages of the race.
The promising galloper continues the stable’s association with Essay Raider’s family. Macdonald also trained Essay Raider’s dame Elegant Eagle, preparing the daughter of Zabeel to win three races from 12 starts.
Elegant Eagle is a sister to Golden Eagle, the dam of super mare Southern Speed.
The mare foaled a sister to Essay Raider last year before delivering a Medaglia D’Oro colt in 2012.
