Powerful performance from Viking Star at Morphettville
Sep 22, 2012
Smart gelding Viking Star posted the first win of his three-year-old campaign with a strong success in the Jockey Celebration Day Handicap (1200m) at Morphettville.
The son of Red Ransom won on debut at Morphettville in April before closing out his juvenile season with a respectable effort in the Listed Oaklands Plate (1600m) in May.
Viking Star showed he had returned for his three-year-old campaign in good fettle with his fourth over 1000 metres before relishing the extra distance of his latest assignment.
Clare Lindop was aboard Viking Star in the $34,000 race. The four-horse field presented a tactical challenge to the jockey but she was equal to the task, finding a stalking position behind the two leaders in the early and middle stages.
Lindop took the powerful galloper into clear running rounding the home turn. Viking Star took time to wind up before surging home over the top of the pacesetters to score by two lengths.
Viking Star is the latest talented galloper foaled by the former top racehorse Dane Belltar. Leon Macdonald trained Dane Belltar to win the Group 3 Lakewood Stud Stakes as a three-year-old filly while she also finished second at Group 1 level in the VRC Oaks and Australasian Oaks in the 2003/04 season.
Dane Belltar won more than $300,000 for her connections. The mare has produced the stakes winners Fawkner and Tanby for the Lloyd Williams operation.
Macdonald paid $120,000 for Viking Star out of the Mill Park Stud draft at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
